Britethorn Speaks

It's Election Day, Charlie Brown!

I recently picked up some Pez dispensers with Charlie Brown and Lucy heads, which gave me the idea for this one. . .

The Finger Game

I took a break from politics today to make a little film for my wife. She wanted me to shoot her playing what she calls "The Finger Game" with our cat, Mithril. For those of you w are interested in such things, Mithrill is an F2 bengal.

Cheers,
John

Potheads Voting. . . Republican?

I've been watching a LOT of political coverage of the G.O.P. blame machine lately and I was really struck by how lost many in the party seem. Sarah Palin's obviously gunning for the nomination in 2012, but I think a lot of other people in the party are using this time to stop and thing about what they want their party to stand for--which I think is a very good indeed. I think successful government almost requires two sides to balance one another out, and I'd like to see the Republican Party take this opportunity to morph into something more positive and lest hateful. I'm tired of them being against everything and would like to see them take on a more responsible role in government. Lower taxes are fine, but smarter spending of the tax dollars would be even better.

Joe Lieberman on Meet the Press

As anyone who knows me can tell you, I am NOT happy with Sen. Joseph Lieberman's behavior during the recent Presidential campaign and its aftermath. I think he's been incredibly ungrateful to President Elect Obama for having allowing him to remain in the Democratic Caucus and to hold onto his Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee. So this is the way I wish his appearance in Meet the Press had gone this morning.

SNL Does Detroit

SNL took a stab at Detroit last night in their opening sketch, which I thought was very funny and potentially very powerful at influencing public opinion in the debate over what to do about bailing out the auto industry. I also share some thoughts about why I've been doing these reviews of the political content of SNL.

Sorry, but for reasons I don't understand, NBC has not yet posted the full sketch on their site. It occurs to me that MAYBE they pissed the crap out of some of the advertisers?

Charlie Cook Discusses SNL

I get a lot of feedback on my SNL commentaries coming from people who actually get mad at me for trying to see a deeper meaning in the show's political satire. "Why can't you just laugh?" "It is meant to be funny and THAT'S IT!"

Well, of course that's not true. The people at The Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs, located at Louisiana State University's Manship School of Mass Communication posted this video of Politcal Expert Charlie Cook discussing the influence of Saturday Night Live on the 2008 campaign. What's especially interesting to me is the fact that Charlie Cook is himself a "talking head" and interacts with the national press corp on a daily basis. So if he says that SNL influenced their coverage of the campaign, I think you have to take it as a rock solid opinion.
